Rocky Mountain National Park Announces Winter Pile Burn Operations

Fire managers from Rocky Mountain National Park plan to take advantage of any upcoming winter weather conditions to burn piles of slash from several forest thinning and hazard tree mitigation projects. Exclusion of fire for the past century has resulted in unnatural forest conditions in some areas, with significant accumulation of forest fuels and an increased risk of a wildfire. In addition, park crews have been cutting hazard trees caused by beetle killed trees. There is an estimated 8,000 to 10,000 piles park wide. If these are all burned, it will be roughly three times the amount of piles that are normally burned in a year.

Slash from these projects has been cut and piled by park fire crews and contractors during the last two years. Pile burning operations may begin as early as October 24, and continue through March as weather permits. The piles, which are now dry enough to burn, are located in a variety of locations on both the east and west sides of the park. Locations include but are not limited to: Bear Lake Road Corridor, Glacier Basin Campground, Sprague Lake, Moraine Park Campground, Deer Mountain, Highway 34 near Deer Ridge Junction, some areas along Trail Ridge Road, Lily Lake area, Wild Basin Road, along US Highway 34 from the park boundary to the Colorado River Trailhead, on the southern boundary of the park (north of the town of Grand Lake), Shadow Mountain, and other areas along Trail Ridge Road on the west side.

A Hike to Dream Lake - Summer in RMNP

The early morning was cool and breezy with the red light of dawn hitting Longs Peak. I couldn’t wait to get up closer and experience the mountains. I chose the iconic hike to Dream Lake as my destination.

Staying in the Moraine Park Campground, I got up early to catch the first Park Shuttle Bus to Bear Lake at 7:25am so that I didn’t need to park my car at the trailhead. By the time I had finished my hike, not only the Bear Lake parking area, but the huge Park and Ride at Glacier Basin were full of cars.

About 20 people poured off the Shuttle bus and dispersed to their trailheads. I crossed the wooden bridge and followed the trail sign to Dream Lake. Now, any of the thousands of people who have done this hike can tell you that this is not a wilderness experience because the trail is wide and well worn, yet it takes you right into the beauty of the mountains. I started slow to warm up and get used to breathing at 9,450 feet, and set a rhythm where I could sustain the consistent, gentle climb without being out of breath.

Views of Longs Peak and Glacier popped up as the trail curved around the mountain. It wasn’t far until the climb topped a crest to see Nymph Lake filled with water lilies and reflections of surrounding peaks. Then continuing on, I was soon next to the sounds of rushing water cascading down the mountain from Dream Lake. This is a great family hike because older kids can enjoy the challenge, and everyone has a chance to make it to the destination, only a mile from the trailhead.

This year there were still patches of snow around the lake in mid-July, and cool breezes blew down off of Hallett Peak across Dream Lake. A cloud hung out next to the peak. I found a patch of marsh marigolds in a marshy area next to melting snow. Beautiful rocks surround the lake with twisted pines growing out of them.

I hope I’ve evoked pleasant memories of Rocky Mountain National Park for those of you who’ve been among the thousands of boots and sneakers to enjoy this hike! The cool mountain air, the summer smell of pine trees, the rushing sound of mountain streams – this is paradise!

Wonderful Opportunity for Birders in RMNP

Rocky Mountain National Park is hosting a migratory bird bash. Join us for an opportunity to learn more about migratory birds while exploring the park with experienced bird watchers. “Go Wild, Go Birding” is this year’s theme, created to celebrate the migration of birds to North American breeding grounds from South American wintering grounds.

The event will be held Saturday, June 11, starting at 8:00 a.m. at the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center in Rocky Mountain National Park. After a short introduction, visitors and bird walk leaders will caravan into the park to view birds in a variety of habitats. In this guided walk, naturalists and expert birders will help beginners identify birds; all ages and abilities are welcome. Suggested items for the morning’s activities include warm clothes, water, good walking shoes, binoculars and a snack. The event will end at noon, but visitors are encouraged to continue their birding adventures throughout the day.

The event is being held to celebrate International Migratory Bird Day, which is celebrated each spring across the United States and Canada. International Migratory Bird Day recognizes the movement of nearly 350 species of birds from their wintering grounds in South America, Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean to nesting habitats in North America.

The activities are free of charge, but regular park entry fees apply.

Trail Ridge Road is Open in RMNP!

Trail Ridge Road - which spans Rocky Mountain National Park and connects Estes Park (on the eastern side of the park) with Grand Lake (on the western slope) opened today for the season! Park visitors have loved this picturesque drive, and the bragging rights that they drove on the United States highest continuously pave road. Reaching 12,183 feet above sea level, is nothing to sneeze at!

The National Parks Service reports, "This year snowplow operators faced many challenges while clearing the road; encountering the most snow they have seen this late in the season for thirty years." Kyle Patterson of NPS shares that the amount of winter snowpack, in combination with late spring storms really made snowplowing efforts difficult.

Historically, Trail Ridge Road is opened to the publice on Memorial Day weekend. The latest opening date (other than this year!) in the past 20 years was June 4, 1994, and the latest it has ever opened was June 26, 1943!

Because the weather conditions at this high altitude can change rapidly, park visitors should be prepared to adjust travel plans, and are encouraged to call the park's Trail Ridge Road recorded phone line at (970)586-1222. The NPS staff will update the recording during and after regular office hours if the road status changes.

Artists in Residence in RMNP - Summer 2011

Each year Rocky Mountain National Park sponsors an Artists in Residence program, seeking artists of all sorts (visual arts, poets, videographers, fine artists, etc.) to come stay in the William Allen White cabin in RMNP for two weeks during the months of June through September. The artists are provided with a serene, comtemplative, and inspiring environment where they can create. They are given the chance to share their creative works with the public at presentations held on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. at the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center auditorium from June 8 through September 17.

The NPS shares "Artists have had a long-standing impact on the formation, expansion and direction of our country’s national parks. Musicians, composers, painters, writers, sculptors and other performing artists also draw upon the multifaceted quality of parks for inspiration. All of these artists translate the national park’s purpose, as a place of pleasure and preservation, into images which bring others enjoyment and a deeper understanding of the parks some may never visit. Rocky Mountain National Park’s Artist-In-Residence program provides artists the opportunity to become a part of a long established tradition of artists in our national parks."

For 2011, seven artists were chosen out of eighty-three aplicants. The artists selected along with their art medium are: Andrew Bedo, Photographer from Rosenberg, Texas; Scott Eldridge, Photographer from Vienna, Virginia; Mark McDermott, Visual Artist from Anchorage, Alaska; Brian Slawson, Visual Artist from Topeka, Kansas; Walt Hester, Photographer from Estes Park, Colorado; Emily Harrington, Visual Artist from Missoula, Montana; Roger Wolfe, Video Photographer from Fort Collins, Colorado. In addition to these artists, a special selection was included this year; Leah Kegerreis, an eight-year-old artist from Texas.

Life is Hard When You're a Baby Elk - New Life in RMNP

Early June is when most of the babies of RMNP arrive. After birth the elk calf spends most of its time hiding in grass or near bushes and following it's mother as she grazes. Nature is momentarily kind during the elks' first week of life - the baby doesn't produce a scent for nearly a week to help allude predators. This reprive is short lived though, as June is a calf's most dangerous time when predators like coyotes are prowling the edges of elk herds looking for a baby hiding in the grass. Generally the mothers form very small herds and the calves start playing with other calves, learning how elk life works. From birth until mid-July the calf will drink about a gallon of milk a day gaining two to three pounds a day. Life gets even harder just a few weeks, or sometimes only days after birth, as the elk herds start to move up to the tundra and the calf has to hike miles gaining 5,000feet of elevation to start enjoying the tundra's sweet grass. Luckily, each calf has plenty of babysitters with the rest of the elk herd watching after them. Parents, when your child whines about a walk around Bear Lake, just remind them "At least you aren't a baby elk!"

You Call this Spring? Update on Trail Ridge Road

The weather and extended forecast has changed some ... since we scheduled our Media Day for snowplowing efforts on Trail Ridge Road! Due to the recent snowstorm and current weather forecast, we will be postponing our media day scheduled for tomorrow.

Currently there is 3 to 4 feet of snow above Rainbow Curve and wind with gusts up to 55 mph above Many Parks Curve. There is 2 inches of ice on the road between Many Parks Curve and Rainbow Curve. The snow and wind is supposed to continue through this evening at higher elevations. The sun aids in our efforts to clear Trail Ridge Road and we might not see it again until tomorrow morning sometime!

We want to keep all of us safe (and reasonably warm) during media day and provide some great visuals for you as well. We will see what happens over the weekend - weather and equipment wise - and touch base with you all early next week.

Long Draw Reservoir Decision Promotes Native Fish Recovery

The National Park Service has approved a "Record of Decision" associated with the Long Draw Reservoir Special Use Authorization issued by the US Forest Service to Water Supply and Storage Company of Fort Collins, Colorado. Long Draw Reservoir is located on National Forest System land, and Water Supply and Storage Company needs the reservoir to provide water for irrigation in Larimer and Weld counties. The reservoir is located approximately 35 air miles west of Fort Collins, in Larimer County.

This decision is being made in conjunction with the Forest Service’s decision to apply terms and conditions to the 30-year authorization for Long Draw Reservoir and is necessary for the Forest Service to implement the selected alternative. The National Park Service, as a cooperating agency, is approving implementation of native greenback cutthroat trout restoration in the headwaters of the Cache la Poudre River within Rocky Mountain National Park by the Forest Service, Water Supply and Storage Company, and their project partners, with oversight provided by the National Park Service. In addition to the activities associated with implementation of the terms and conditions for the Long Draw reservoir authorization, the National Park Service will implement native fish restoration in Cascade Creek.

The Forest Service is the lead agency for this project because Long Draw Reservoir is on National Forest System lands. The National Park Service is a cooperating agency on this project because impacts from the operations of Long Draw Reservoir affect lands within Rocky Mountain National Park, which is managed by the National Park Service, and the alternative selected for implementation proposes actions within the park. Greenback cutthroat trout restoration was identified by both agencies as the preferred alternative and the environmentally preferred alternative in the Final Environmental Impact Statement.

The alternative selected by the National Park Service includes the construction of natural-appearing fish barriers on several Cache la Poudre headwater streams, the removal of non-native fish above the barriers and stocking the streams with native greenback cutthroat trout. The barriers are needed to keep non-native fish from invading the restored cutthroat habitat.

Eventually the man-made barriers will be removed and the cutthroat habitat will form one interconnected system above a natural waterfall on the main stem of the Cache la Poudre River. The interconnection of habitat will create what biologists call a “metapopulation” of greenback cutthroat trout. It is anticipated that it could take 20 years to establish the metapopulation.

The Record of Decision includes a description of the background of the project; a statement of the decision made including key actions and mitigating measures/monitoring to minimize environmental harm; the basis for the decision; an overview of public involvement and agency consultation in the decision-making process; a description of other alternatives considered; a description of the environmentally preferred alternative; and a findings on impairment of park resources and values.

Entrance Fees Waived at Rocky Mountain National Park
During National Park Week

Estes Park, CO -- Entrance fees to Rocky Mountain National Park and the additional 393 National Park Service sites will be waived during National Park Week, April 16-24, 2011. In January, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced 17 fee-free days in our national parks, monuments and sites during 2011. National Park Week is the longest fee-free period this year.

"In these tough economic times, our fee-free days will give families many opportunities to enjoy our nation's heritage and natural beauty in meaningful and affordable ways," Salazar said. According to National Park Service Director John Jarvis, “National Park Week is a great time to add to your own national park ‘life list,’ so visit a park you have never been to before.”

The signs of spring are starting to appear in the park with migratory birds being observed and snow melting away at lower elevations. Snowshoers and skiers are still enjoying good snow conditions at the higher elevations while spring hikers are finding the lowest trails in the park snow-free. The park is a great place to get some exercise with a short hike, some bird watching or backcountry travel. However, park rangers warn visitors to stay off lakes this time of year due to unsafe ice.

Each Saturday evening at 7 p.m. at the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center the park offers a speaker series focusing on the theme, “Trying to See the Forest for the Trees: Forest Health in the Rocky Mountains.” The program on April 23 titled “Impacts of Mountain Pine Beetles on Ponderosa Pine in Rocky Mountain National Park and the Front Range” will be offered by Dr. Jenny Briggs, a Research Ecologist at the U.S. Geological Survey’s Rocky Mountain Geographic Science Center in Denver. These programs are free and open to the public.

Additional fee-free dates will be the first day of summer (June 21), National Public Lands Day (September 24), and the weekend of Veterans Day (November 11-13).

First Signs of Spring in RMNP

April may be one of Rocky Mountain National Park's snowy months, but its also the beginning of spring. Once the first flowers start to bloom, no matter how much more snow we get it is spring in my mind. Generally the first flowers you can find above 8,000 ft. are the Early Buttercups. Their single bright yellow flower (about the size of dime) are often surrounded by mud and snow, eagerly awaiting the first insects to find them. Look closely and you will see a shiny yellow petal. Using starch under the yellow pigments, the flower petal flashes like a rescue mirror, hoping to catch the eye of a winged friend going by, in this case it is generally a fly. Few people are aware that flies are one of the most common pollinators in the world. Watch your step along the edges of trails and you may just see one of these tiny harbingers of spring.

The White Rabbit of our Winter Wonderland

While out snowshoeing through the wonderland that is Rocky Mountain National Park, you might just spot the white rabbit. Well...it's not actually a white rabbit, it's a hare: a Snowshoe Hare. The main differences between rabbits and hares is that hares give birth to furry young with their eyes open and ready to run.

Snowshoe hares use their huge hind feet to stay on top of the snow, and they are one of the few animals to take advantage of the snowy landscape to reach new resources. With multiple feet of snow on the ground, snowshoe hares can reach tree buds many feet higher than they're able to in the summer months.

Snowshoe hares use their white coats to stay camouflaged, but you can generally find their tracks that look like repeating T's. The need to camouflage to hide from coyotes, lynx, bobcats, mountain lions, and even owls and hawks. They are mostly nocturnal and have huge black eyes which make them look very sweet. So come to the park with snowshoes on your own feet and keep your eyes peeled for the telltale T tracks in the snow. You might just spot a furry snowball with big black eyes!

February is generally the dead of winter in Rocky Mountain National Park, but it can also be one of the most beautiful and captivating times of the year. The thought of an icy landscape, bare branches, and howling winds conjures up images of stagnancy and hibernation – though this time of year is more alive than one would think if you are willing to look closely! Even the ice on Rocky’s subalpine lakes that we think of as a frozen solid is moving and shifting as it constantly freezes and refreezes while the temperature fluctuates and the wind blows. The sights of the undulating ripples of ice can transport you into another world…that is until a 30 mph gust of wind jolts you back to reality! Even the rivers come alive with the ice. Imagine walking down the river beds as they wind through the Park’s meadows, catching glimpses of a coyote against the snowy back-drop, and following the tracks of an elk as he uses the river bed as an easy winter route to travel. Carnival in the Rockies!

By mid-winter, the excitement of the holidays are over and many people are looking for a fun diversion. On February 5, 2011 downtown Grand Lake pulls out all the stops to host a festival that's as unique, quirky, and laughter-inducing as you can find. The Grand Lake Winter Carnival is a day of off-beat fun combining parades, contests, races, and merriment - so dust off your halloween costumes and get ready to join the fun! This year the theme is "A Space Oddity", so there will be Snow-alien contests (How much fun is that? A snowman with three heads, tenticles, and antennae...my creative juices are flowing), flying saucer human bowling, comet teapot curling and more. There are great activities to do with the kids too: a steeplechase, and parent and child sled pull to name a few. After sundown, the sky will be ablaze with an awesome fireworks display and space creatures will cut a rug at the annual ball.

Explore RMNP in the Winter - So Many Things To Do!

For many visitors, winter is their favorite season to enjoy Rocky Mountain National Park. The park is less visited but still very much open and alive with activity. Beautiful backcountry areas can be reached on snowshoes, skis, and at lower elevations - even with hiking boots! Elk, coyotes, deer, snowshoe hares, and other wildlife remain active through the winter. Their story is told by the tracks left in the snow. For those visitors who are prepared, winter is an enchanting time to explore the park.

Snowshoeing and skiing are fun ways to experience the backcountry of Rocky Mountain National Park. This winter, join a park ranger on a wintry excursion! Rocky Mountain National Park offers ranger-led snowshoe ecology walks for beginner level snowshoers on the east side, and for beginner and intermediate level snowshoers and cross-country skiers on the west side of the park. No additional fees are charged to participate, however reservations are required.

Snowshoeing is easy to learn and opens up a new way to see the beauty of nature during its quietest season. For beginners, the snowshoe program is a two-hour exploration of the natural world of the subalpine forest. No previous snowshoe experience is required. On the east side, this walk is held on Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. through March 27. The beginner snowshoe tour on the west side is held on Saturdays at 1:00 p.m. through March 19. Beginning on February 5, an additional west side tour will be offered at 9:00 a.m. on Saturdays.

For more experienced snowshoers, a two-hour snowshoe walk is offered on Sundays at 1:00 p.m. through March 13 on the west side of the park. Previous snowshoeing experience is recommended because of the elevation gain, mileage, pace and terrain covered in this program.

Ranger-led cross country ski tours are offered on the west side of the park on Saturdays at 9:30 a.m. through January 29. Participants ski a snow-draped landscape and learn about the Kawuneeche Valley. All snowshoe walks and ski tours require reservations. Reservations can be made in advance, seven days or less prior to the desired program. Participants must furnish their own equipment, including poles with baskets, and be at least 8 years old. To make reservations for east side snowshoe walks, call the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center at (970) 586-1223 between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. daily. To make reservations for west side snowshoe walks, call the Kawuneeche Visitor Center at (970) 627-3471 between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. daily.

Frontcountry and backcountry camping take place in the winter too! Longs Peak Campground, Timber Creek Campground and designated sections of Moraine Park Campground are open all winter; the fee is $14 per site per night. Water and dump stations are not available in winter at the campgrounds. Self-registration permits for backcountry camping in winter zones are available. There is no charge in the winter for backcountry camping.

Sledding activities can be enjoyed in Rocky Mountain National Park at the Hidden Valley area. Hidden Valley slopes have been contoured to enhance the safety of sledding and other snowplay activities. Facilities at Hidden Valley include a warming hut, which is open weekends, and heated restrooms which are open daily. Wildlife in Rocky Mountain National Park - Coyotes

Dont be a Slouch in the New Year!
As the New Year rolls in, humans aren’t the only creatures getting used to the changes winter brings. The animals of Rocky Mountain National Park are experiencing winter in full swing, and the new crop of coyote pups are no exception. In areas like Rocky Mountain National Park where hunting is not permitted, coyotes often form long relationships, producing pups with the same mate year after year. Each year, some of these lucky pups are granted the privilege of living in their parents’ territory and helping to raise the next litter of pups. These select coyotes learn how to raise pups, share food, and some of the female yearlings may even nurse the new pups. The yearlings that are not selected to stay, head off to find a mate and a new location to call home – often miles from their parents’ home range. Perhaps all too similar to the human parents’ plight, there are a small number of coyote yearlings who don’t venture off to forge their own family or help mom and dad out, while still living in their parents’ home range. These coyotes are called slouches.

Winter Fun in RMNP - bring the kids!

Snow accumulations are varying greatly depending on the elevations in Rocky Mountain National Park. On the west side of the park there is roughly 6 inches of new snow today at the Kawuneeche Visitor Center, with snow still falling. Sunday there was 7.4 inches of new snow and Saturday saw 6 inches of new snow. Kawuneeche Visitor Center is located at 8,720 feet near Grand Lake.

On the east side of the park there was 11.5 inches of new snow early this morning at Bear Lake, elevation 9,475 feet. Hidden Valley (9.240 feet) received over a foot last night. It has been snowing all day above 9,000 feet. Visitors are taking advantage of the fresh snow and enjoying backcountry skiing, snowshoeing and snowplay, including sledding at Hidden Valley. Hidden Valley is the only place sledding is allowed in Rocky Mountain National Park. At this time below 9,000 feet on the east side the snow is just starting to accumulate, all day we have received much moisture with a rain/snow mix. Visitors should expect winter driving conditions in higher elevations in the park.

Join a ranger for a beginner level snowshoe tour exploring the natural world of a subalpine forest. Ages 8 years old and above. Participants will need to bring their own snowshoes which can be rented at sporting goods stores. Reservations required - call (970) 586-1223 beginning December 22.

Big Horn Sheep - Love on the Rocks in RMNP

Here in Rocky Mountain National Park, December is the Big Horn Sheep's mating season. Big Horns spend most of the year in small bands of females and lambs, with the males in separate bands of mixed ages. Most of the time females just want to eat grass generally on a southern facing slope, but for as little as 48 hours a year the ladies are in estrus and looking for the right guy. During these extremely brief mating periods, females attract males through scent and may attract more than a handful of suitors. Females select males on a basis of body size, horn size, and fitness. They attract a few males and then run, much like a scene from a school yard where the boys chase the girls. During the pursuit, the lead male will often turn on the males behind him and clash. The sounds of two rams crashing their heads together can be heard from over a mile away. In the end, the female selects a male to mate with and will very likely not interact with him again. So be sure to scan the rocky southern facing cliffs around Estes Park during the first two weeks of December. For Big Horn Sheep, love really is on the rocks.

A friend (and fellow L.O.T.W. - that's Lover of the Wild for my acronym challenged readers) posted this on her blog: http://whitneyconnerclapper.blogspot.com/2010/11/outlive-bastards.html , and I loved the reminder to all of us who love the wild - revelling in it, playing in it, and staying alive because of it - to "get out there and hunt and fish and mess around with your friends, ramble out yonder and explore the forests, encounter the Griz, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air, sit quietly for a while and contemplate that precious stillness, that lovely, mysterious awesome space." Thank you Whit, and Edward Abbey...now I'm headed outside.

Autumn Armchair Adventure -- A RMNP Book Review

I recently finished reading A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains by Isabella L. Bird. It is a firsthand account of a middle-aged English lady traveling alone by horseback in the autumn and early winter of 1873. Widely travelled, she found Estes Park "surely one of the most entrancing spots on earth" and "no region for tourists or women" -- how things have changed! She made her way to the top of Longs Peak (only 5 years after it had first been climbed) with a one-eyed desperado named Mountain Jim as her guide. She rode her borrowed horse up and down the St Vrain from Longmont during a ferocious storm and stayed in an Estes Park log hunting cabin without chinking (can you hear the wind howling through those logs?), awakening to a fresh covering of fine snow. Her keen observations of the people she encountered and the "wild west" Colorado mountian lifestyle of another era make this book a good read for modern day armchair adventurers familiar with Estes Park and the surrounding terrain.

Indian Summer Hike - Heaven in the Rockies!

With the fall colors in full swing and this Indian summer hanging on, I decided a day on the trails was just what I needed! With the company of a good friend, I picked a few classic destinations on a loop that would take us through some of the parks most spectacular terrain. We arrived at the Bear Lake parking lot at about 8:00am with a blue sky overhead and cool, crisp air greeting us as we walked toward the lake. Our first destination would be Bierstadt Lake, about two miles from Bear Lake. This is a gently rolling trail through beautiful sub-alpine forest. It’s one of my favorite trails in the park and one I hike often. Before long we were cruising around Bierstadt Lake and heading down toward the Bierstadt Lake trail head.

This section of trail is steep with a series of switchbacks to ease the burden. The aspen trees were spectacular and we had to try to make ourselves keep moving as it was easy to stop for extended periods to gaze at all of the color. And the color is just the beginning of the views this trail offers. One can see for miles along the Continental Divide and Longs Peak, directly to the south. Truly amazing! We were soon crossing Bear Lake Rd. and heading up the Storm Pass Trail to the connector trail that would take us into Glacier Gorge. The next stop was to be Sky Pond, by way of The Loch, Timberline Falls, and Lake of Glass.

This hike embodies Rocky Mountain National Park. The deeper you get into Glacier Gorge and Loch Vale, the more you see why this place is so special. The waterfalls, sheer cliffs, high mountain peaks, pristine alpine lakes, and slap-you-in-the-face beauty awaken the senses and let you know you are in the presence of perfection. We spent a little time at The Loch trying to count all of the trout (we lost count at 20 just near the outlet stream), and soaking in the day. We forced ourselves to mosey along higher into the valley and before we knew it were climbing the steep trail towards Timberline Falls. This time of year it’s not flowing as dramatically as it does in the spring and summer months, but it’s still an amazing sight. From here, the trail scrambles up beside the waterfall, making it hard to keep your feet dry. This is a 3rd class scramble and caution needs to be used as a slip here would not be good! But the effort is rewarded with one of the most breathtaking basins in the state of Colorado. You reach Lake of Glass first, a beautiful emerald colored lake with towering spires and 13,000 foot peaks surrounding it. We also lost count of the trout in this lake at about 35. A great place to throw out a fly if one were so inclined. From Lake of Glass we wound our way through stunted pines, rock outcroppings, and more dramatic scenery until we reached Sky Pond. Again, a lake that needs to be visited to understand exactly what you’re dealing with. Unmatched beauty. And the weather was absolutely perfect. There was not a breath of wind, the temperature was probably 55, and there were just a handful of pretty white and fluffy clouds. These are the days you dream about!

We now had about another 5 miles to hike to get back to the Bear Lake parking lot. We made quick work of the trail and were soon climbing the final hill that dumps you out at Bear Lake. What a spectacular day on a few of my favorite trails to a few of my favorite lakes!

This is surely the year for bears!

A friend called me to get the phone number of the Wildlife Officer who deals with bears. I went to their home down in the Highway 34 canyon on the way to Loveland. A bear had tipped over a birdseed container they had chained to the tree and he was feasting. I got there just as the Wildlife Officer fired a shot of rubber pellets from her shotgun. The bear, very black and bigger than the bears we have had right in Estes Park, took off running and she fired a second shot at him. Boy, he was running fast. It is amazing to see them waddling along on their slow walk and then trying to realize how fast they can really move. So we spent a half an hour cleaning up birdseed, and then pepper sprayed the area around the container in case he comes back. We warned the family to not go near that area for at least a couple of days until the residual of the pepper spray wears off or a good rain washes it off. That is nasty stuff!

Being out in the dark with a flashlight checking to make sure the bear was gone - one does not have any trouble staying alert! Every little night sound of the forest sounded like the bear was right there. In truth he was probably a mile away and still running… but the mind is not ready to accept that.

Little Bear

Little bear has been on the back deck for the past 15 minutes, right at the back door, checking out the empty recycle bins. He got up on top of the grill and tried to get it open.

Returning from errands about 1:30 PM and starting out the back door, little bear was sitting on the big rock drinking from my hummingbird feeder. QUITE A SURPRISE! He retreated to the tree when I shot this photo. Now the feeder is PERMANENTLY RETIRED FOR THE SUMMER.

Artists Selected for Program at Rocky Mountain National Park

Six artists have been selected for the summer 2010 Artist-in-Residence Program at Rocky Mountain National Park. Artists will be provided with a creative, contemplative environment in which to generate artistic works and share their works with the public. Artistic diversity, new ideas and creative uses of media were encouraged in the application process. Six artists were selected out of one hundred and four applicants. The artists selected along with their art medium are: Steve Gifford, Photographer from Hubstadt, Indiana; Edward Aldrich, Visual Artist from Golden, Colorado; Stephen Lias, Composer from Nacogdoches, Texas; Rick Braveheart, Photographer from Columbus, Ohio; Glenn Freeman, Poet from Mt. Vernon, Iowa; David Mooney, Visual Artist from Grass Valley, California. Artists are given two-week residencies at the William Allen White cabin from June through September. During their stay at the park, artists share their vision in two public presentations. These presentations are held on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. at the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center auditorium from June 23 through September 7. Artists have had a long-standing impact on the formation, expansion and direction of our country’s national parks. Musicians, composers, painters, writers, sculptors and other performing artists also draw upon the multifaceted quality of parks for inspiration. All of these artists translate the national park’s purpose, as a place of pleasure and preservation, into images which bring others enjoyment and a deeper understanding of the parks some may never visit. Rocky Mountain National Park’s Artist-In-Residence program provides artists the opportunity to become a part of a long established tradition of artists in our national parks. I visited Grand Lake last week, only to discover the most quaint and charming mountain village in Colorado. Grand Lake hugs both the western entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park and the beautiful and grandest glacier lake in the US, Grand Lake. The park, lake, and the town of Grand Lake offer the best for the outdoor enthusiast... hiking, wildlife viewing (saw two moose grazing), boating, golfing, horse-back riding, camping... you name it, they have it! The mayor, Judy Burke, the chamber, and the town, warmly welcome ALL to this jewel of the Rockies!

Be sure to take the drive on beautiful Trail Ridge Road over to Grand Lake... you'll see what I mean!
